The first thing that brings people to consider to start a weight loss routine is the moment when they realize that they are ‘fat’. ‘Fat’ is a general, more popular term, describing people which carry extra pounds on their body. Am I overweight?
The categorisation over whether you are overweight or obese is slightly more difficult as it is a very fine line. The term ‘overweight’ applies to anybody who is just outside the healthy range; their BMI is slightly greater than 24, but does not exceed 29. If you are in the overweight category then it is very straightforward to get yourself back into the healthy range with regular exercise and by eating the right foods. If the answer to the question ‘am I overweight’ is yes, then do not get downhearted; whilst it may mean that you are slightly fat it will only take minor lifestyle changes to ensure that you soon return to the healthy range.
Am I obese?
If you are categorised as obese then it isn’t quite so easy. When you are obese it means that your BMI is over 30. Obviously, this isn’t the end of the world and with hard work then you will find that the weight begins to fall off you. It is, however, at the ‘obese’ point that you get the term ‘fat’ applied to you, as is the point at which you become noticeably more rotund. The problem with this is that it can give you a low self confidence issue that makes it difficult to change without motivation. Therefore, if you answer the question ‘am I obese’ with a yes, do not see it as negative but it is an obvious sign that change is needed.
Danger arises when you choose to neglect your obesity problem and prolong the span of living with a large excess of weight on your body. This is the moment when other health problems determined by obesity will start to unfold. One of the most common is osteoarthritis.
