When it comes to avoiding holiday weight gain, it is all about controlling your portions, particularly when there are so many different temptations. When you are on holiday, calories are lurking behind each and every corner. Particularly if you are on an all inclusive holiday, you seem to be surrounded by food! Let’s take a look at how you can avoid holiday weight gain.

Why You Need to Watch the Calories
You may wonder what the real harm is of putting on a little weight on holiday. It will only be a pound or so and you can lose that easily right? Wrong, because it seems people actually never lose this summer weight gain. Each year, after each holiday, you gain another pound until you end up being quite obese. In fact, holiday weigh gain is quite an important factor in obesity in adults. However, you don’t have to fall into this slow cycle of continuous weight gain during holidays. If you can control your portions, you should be able to do just fine. This means that you can eat everything you want to eat, so long as you moderate how much of it you eat. Of course, this is really difficult, but there are a number of tips you can follow to avoid the difficult temptations and to avoid weight gain when you are on holiday.

Divert Attention
A lot of people seem to forget that holidays aren’t just about the food, even if you are on an all inclusive. Try to divert your attention away from the fact that you can eat as much as you want. You are on holiday, so go enjoy some of the entertainment, go for a swim or a relax on the beach. Try to stop thinking about food and to not be confronted with it all the time.

Eat Slowly
Some people seem to think that limiting the time they spend eating will help them keep the calories down. This doesn’t actually work. If you force yourself to only eat for a set period of time, you will chew faster and eat more. Instead, eat whenever you want, but chew each bit of food at least 25 times and chew slowly. You will feel fuller sooner and hence eat less. Also try to put your cutlery down after each bit.

Watch the Snacks
How easy is it to see a little snack and think you’ll just have one quick one? It’s only a snack, it’s small in size, what’s the harm right? The problem is that there are too many little snacks and if you add all of these together, you end up with one huge portion.

Be Smarter than the Buffet
If you are on an all inclusive holiday, it is likely that there are a number of buffets for you to choose from. Try to outsmart the buffet and pick the smallest possible plate and make sure you can still see each item of food on that plate. That way, you won’t stand the chance of having too much food on your plate and eating it all just so you don’t waste food. Also try to stay away from the dips and sauces.

Limit Alcohol and Sweets
We’re all the same: when we are in a foreign country, one of the things we want to try is the sweets. Feel free to try some, but don’t sit there eating a full box of Turkish Delight. Also think about your alcohol consumption. There are huge amounts of calories in alcohol and it is easy to be tempted by these, particularly on an all inclusive. Try to stay away from that though, because you won’t only pile on the pounds, but you will also find it far more difficult to control what you are eating.

Exercise and Walk
After you have eaten, go for a nice stroll along the beach or through the gardens of your resort. Walking off the calories is a fantastic way to keep those holiday pounds at bay. The more you’ve eaten, the longer your walk should be.
