Fasting for Weight Loss

Fasting for weight loss is a difficult technique to follow, but it has been shown to provide relatively fast weight loss, especially to people who would like to lose a lot of weight. Fasting is the idea of eating little food over a period of time; usually just enough nutrients to keep your body functioning properly. Eating too little can have disastrous consequences to your health, but eat too much and you won’t be achieving your goals.

The major advantage to fasting, if done right, is that you will lose weight – you’re simply not eating and so you are bound to be losing weight. However, you need to find substitutes to get the required vitamins, minerals and proteins to help keep your body working. Having juices and some fruits will help you achieve this.

There will be sacrifices though – you won’t be able to eat meals with your family as the temptation to eat food when you’re fasting will be so great that you won’t be able to resist. You may also struggle in day to day activities – you’ll feel tired a lot and will struggle to exercise, go to work, or have social interactions. This is why fasting weight loss is a rapid short term weight loss strategy – long term fasting for weight loss is dangerous. Once you finish fasting and go back to your normal diet, you will put the weight back on too, so it’s important to have a plan for after the fasting period to keep your weight at your desired level.

If you want to try out fasting for weight loss, then you can do one day fasts. Set yourself a time to start and stop – sunrise is a good starting point. Decide on the day you’re going to fast and then get your mind and body prepared for it. You need to get it straight in your mind that on this day you’re not going to eat any food at all and then you won’t be tempted. You can, however, still drink water in this period. The day before you should also eat a good amount of food and take in plenty of liquids to prepare yourself for the next day.

When the fasting day comes only do the very lightest of physical tasks, and try and spend your day thinking instead. You can do these one-day fasts twice a month as part of a healthy weight loss diet plan. This sort of fasting and weight loss will help flush out your organs and eliminate toxins in your body – sometimes even your organs need a day off work!

Many prefer to combine fasting for weight loss with fasting for religious traditions. This way they will lose weight and obtain spiritual blessing too. Whatever reason you choose to fast for, you always have to carefully plan your meals and continue to nourish your body with all the needed nutrients. For example, most fasting habits promote the abstinence from any type of meat. Avoiding meat leads to lack of protein. You can avoid this by introducing mushrooms, an important source of proteins, in your diet.

Extreme dark chocolate (85% cocoa) should also be used during fasting times. It’s accepted and welcomed due to the important energizing effects and low calorie intake. Green tea is another great solution when it comes to extra energy and weight loss properties.

Absolute fasting promotes abstinence from all food and liquid for 24 hours. It’s a fast that we definitely don’t encourage, from the weight loss point of view. Religious people usually choose absolute fasting before an important holiday, but that’s solely out of spiritual reasons and not for weight loss. Fasting is a weight loss solution as long as it’s integrated in a proper routine which promotes physical activity and healthy eating!
