Stress and Weight Loss or Weight Gain?

stress and weight loss
Mental stress is caused by feeling pressurised by a range of different factors. We can often feel stressed by our work, family affairs, friends, even holidays can be stressful times for those organising it. No one likes feeling stressed and there are a number of symptoms that we should look out for if we want to identify stress. The main symptom is an inability to sleep. In order for us to enter a state of sleep we must be sufficiently relaxed that we don’t have a multitude of thoughts running through our heads. Obviously, if you are stressed about something then you are unlikely to be able to do this. A lack of sleep leads to a number of secondary symptoms such as increased anxiety, irritability and an inability to concentrate fully on the task at hand.

There are, however, a number of ways in which we can reduce the effect of stress or even avoid stress completely. The first is through various breathing techniques. If you concentrate on something non stressful then you are able to forget whatever it is that is worrying you and, as such, feel more relaxed. When you are stressed, the best thing you can do is to breathe slowly and deliberately. Breathe in through the nose and then out through the mouth and repeat until you feel relaxed. This is a proven method. By channelling your breathing you can take your mind completely of your troubles and it certainly relaxes you.

If you are feeling stressed then there will be changes in your weight. Because of the lack of sleep you are active for a much longer period of time. Your metabolism slows when you sleep so, by staying awake, you keep it at a high level which means that food is continually digested. This helps you to lose weight. Also, some people, when they have feelings of stress, eat less and will lose weight that way. However, when this occurs you are essentially starving yourself which is very dangerous. Thus, weight loss through mental stress is a very bad thing.

Some people also get stress weight gain. This occurs because of the way that other people deal with stress. Some people try to avoid stress by eating more; essentially comfort eating. This is much more common and it is something that is likely to be regretted after the task has been completed and you no longer feel stressed. Stress is something that should be avoided at all costs, so remember to breathe!

More, learn to save some time daily for yourself. No matter how busy you are, you need to be able to take care of yourself and give your body time to breathe. This will help you to significantly lower the stress level of your body. Avoiding stress leads to avoiding a whole other range of illnesses which can seriously affect your general health.

As mentioned above stress can lead to weight loss or weight gain. However, you should avoid stress in the first place. Do not get excited if you lose or gain weight because of stress. It is not healthy and you need to change your lifestyle right away!
